Congrats on your newborn bundle of joy! The journey of preparing for a newborn baby is exciting as well as overwhelming. One of the most important areas to prepare for your new baby is the nursery. Don’t worry! We have prepared a complete baby nursery checklist so you can get a jump on stocking up on nursery essentials.
Nursery Essentials Checklist
A crib is the most important obvious item on your baby nursery checklist. Safety standards for cribs change often so try to avoid using a crib that is more then a few years old. Slats should be 2 and 3/8 inches apart or less.
Crib Mattresses should have a firm fit inside your crib with no more than 2 fingers width of space between the edge of the mattress and sides of the crib. A newborn’s mattress should be firm. Avoid seeking a soft comfortable feel that you would prefer for yourself.
- Diaper Changing Table
Nursery changing tables are a bit expensive. However they will save your back and make life a lot easier. A cheaper option would be to buy just the changer top and make room for it on top of the dresser.
- Dirty Diaper Bin
No nursery checklist is complete without a dirty diaper bin. They minimize the smell of dirty diapers and only require to be emptied about once a week. This will keep your nursery, kitchen and trash cans free of dirty diaper odors.
- Glider/Rocking Chair and Footrest
Babies love two activities: rocking and snuggling. A glider/rocking chair offers fussy newborns both.
A bassinet is one of the optional items on your nursery checklist. You may want some form of bassinet if the baby will be sleeping in your room. Some attach directly to your bed. These can be especially helpful for C-section moms who have trouble lifting their baby.
Baby clothes accumulate fast! Newborn dressers hold a good sized wardrobe and some are even equipped with slide-out changing tables and other neat accessories to make your life easier.
- Audio or Video Baby Monitor
It is wise to invest in a baby monitor with two receivers so you can keep one in your bedroom for nighttime and another in a separate area of the house that you spend your time. Some baby monitors have the ability to scan two separate rooms at the same time to listen for a napping newborn.
- Cool Mist Humidifier/Vaporizer
A good humidifier avoids dry air in your newborns room. This helps to keep airways free during a common cold. A humidifier will also help to avoid dry and sensitive skin. Look for something that is as quiet as possible since it will be used near your baby’s sleeping area.
- Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detector
No baby nursery should be without these. You can pick up a combo pack at your local hardware store. This is one of the most important items on your nursery checklist.
You’ll need a laundry hamper for newborn clothes. This helps to keep clothes and items separate from the rest of the household if you are planning to use a separate mild detergent for your baby.
The soft glow of a night-light is soothing to a newborn and allows you to slip in and out of the nursery at nighttime.
