Kids are always pretty lively – especially when they’ve overdone the fizzy pop – but how can you tell if it’s something more serious like attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Here are a few symptoms to look out for:
- Difficulty paying attention, being easily distracted, and struggling with organisation.
- Fidgeting, difficulty playing quietly, and talking excessively.
- Difficulty waiting their turn and always interrupting others.
If you’re concerned, speak to your doctor who will be able to refer you to a child psychologist for a full assessment.
And parents say:
When my son was in Y1 his teacher suggested he was hyperactive as he couldn’t sit on the carpet without fidgeting. I asked the Health Visitor to assess him and for the half hour she was with us he sat on the carpet and did a jigsaw! I realised that the problem was that he was just bored in class and didn’t want to sit on the carpet! Be careful not to let your kids be labelled. Remember you know them best.
