Cleaning products: are they safe to use during pregnancy?

Cleaning during pregnancyThe good news is you can continue to scrub the toilet with your favourite bowl cleaner, and even mop your floors. No, hang on a moment – maybe that’s the bad news. Either way, everyday household cleaners are safe to use while pregnant, as long as you take the usual precautions, such as making sure the room is well ventilated and donning the Marigolds.

What to avoid

That said, there are a couple of exceptions: oven cleaners and dry cleaning solutions. These are both potentially toxic to your unborn child, so send your partner to pick up the dry cleaning. In fact, while he’s at it he may as well scrub the cooker, too!

Good alternatives

If you’re still concerned about using cleaning products, or the smell of your usual ones makes you feel sick, baking soda, vinegar and a little elbow grease make pretty good substitutes for just about everything you normally use. Kim and Aggie would be proud!
